According to research by confused.com and reported in the Times, if you define your job as "barrister" you may pay more than if you say "lawyer". A "builder" may pay more than a "bricklayer". Of course you need to be truthful about your job. To say you're an accountant (low insurance risk) when you're really a reporter isn't allowed! However there are many jobs that could legitimately come under different titles. So as well as shopping around from one insurance provider to another, it's well worth getting different quotes for different but relevant job titles.

Another potential area for saving is if you are asked to enter your annual mileage. Check what your mileage was last year, and if you think it'll be about the same this year, put that figure. If you think "oh, I think it's less than 20,000" and put that when in fact it's less than 12,000 you could be paying too much for your car insurance.

When using a price comparison website like compare.com or moneysupermarket.com, make sure you are comparing like for like. One insurer may cover you for a lower premium but have a higher excess if you have an accident. Direct Line have opted out of price comparison websites, saying they are inaccurate. However, critics suggest that this is because Direct Line quotes are not as cheap as their competitors.
