Young Drivers Insurance

InsuranceJust passed your test and need car insurance? For young drivers, particularly boys, car insurance is very expensive. There's a reason for this - one in five drivers has an accident within the first 6 months of passing their test. So new drivers are not a good risk for insurance companies. Some insurance companies will not even give an insurance quote for new drivers. Quotes for motor insurance can vary enormously, so it's definitely worth searching on the internet for the best deal.
Here are some factors that effect your premium:

PASS PLUS
Every new driver should do Pass Plus. The majority of people will save money on their insurance if they do the Pass Plus scheme within 12 months of passing the test. However only about 10% of people bother to take the course. That means that 90% of new drivers are throwing away the opportunity to save money on their insurance. Discounts will vary from insurer to insurer. Amongst those insurers who offer a discount include AA Insurance, RAC Direct, Churchill, Direct Line, Norwich Union.

WHERE YOU LIVE
Your postcode will have a significant impact on your insurance. People living in inner cities will normally pay more than those living in rural areas

TYPE OF CAR
Every car is placed in an Insurance Group ranging from 1-20. This will depend on such factors as engine-size, performance, security and how expensive replacement parts are. An example of a car in a low insurance group would be the Citroen C2 which is in Insurance Group 2. Depending on the model, the Renault Clio is in Groups 3 - 7, Vauxhall Astra Groups 4 - 11, BMW 3-series in Groups 11 - 20. For your first car it's definitely best to get a car in group 5 or below - preferably in group 1 or 2.

SECURITY
If you have an extra immobiliser or alarm, this may lower the cost of insurance

DRIVING HISTORY
Any accidents or driving convictions will increase the cost of your insurance

LEVEL OF COVER
Usually, if it is a cheap second hand car, it's not worth having comprehensive insurance - one year's insurance could cost you more than the car is worth! Third Party Fire & Theft is the best level of cover in these circumstances. Fully comprehensive will cover the cost of damage to your car (less any excess), even if the accident is your fault. This is worthwhile if you have a more expensive first car. If you accept a higher level of excess than the satndard policy, this can lower the cost of your insurance.
